Overview
In Android, the Android System WebView is an essential system component responsible for rendering web content inside native apps—including in-app browsers, banking apps, email clients, and authentication dialogs. Stock Google WebView and OEM variants frequently embed telemetry, tracking hooks, and unshielded hardware fingerprinting vectors.
Developed by hddq, magisk-cromite-webview is a systemless module that swaps out the stock system WebView for Cromite—the privacy-focused, de-Googled fork of Chromium that carries on the legacy of the Bromite project.
Why Cromite WebView?
- Anti-Fingerprinting Protections: Defends against canvas fingerprinting, WebGL hardware enumeration, and audio context profiling.
- Native Ad & Tracker Blocking: Built-in content blocking shields in-app browsing sessions from intrusive ads and tracker telemetry.
- De-Googled Codebase: Strips Google metrics, crash reporting, and analytical hooks present in standard AOSP and Google WebView binaries.
- Regular Security Updates: The project runs automated GitHub Actions workflows that check upstream Cromite releases every 24 hours, compiling and publishing new module packages promptly.
