Overview
For system administrators, developers, and power users, rsync is the gold standard utility for fast, incremental file copying and remote synchronization across POSIX systems. Standard Android distributions lack rsync out of the box, forcing users to either rely on bulky Termux environments or slow MTP USB protocols when transferring massive photo libraries and backup folders.
Developed by AdalynAstatine, rsync-magisk is a lightweight systemless utility module that installs a statically compiled rsync binary directly into /system/bin/.
Practical Use Cases
- Incremental LAN Backups: Synchronize your
/sdcard/DCIM/Camera/directory directly to a local home server or Network Attached Storage (NAS) over SSH:su -c rsync -avz --progress /sdcard/DCIM/Camera/ user@nas.local:/volume1/backups/phone_photos/ - Automated Scheduled Sync: Combine rsync with Tasker, Cron (e.g., via
crond4android), or boot scripts to mirror key folders whenever your phone connects to home Wi-Fi and connects to a charger. - Partition & App Backups: Rapidly mirror partition image dumps or Titanium/Swift backup directories to external hard drives without re-copying unchanged files.
Installation & Verification
- Download the latest
rsync-magisk.ziprelease from GitHub. - Open Magisk, navigate to Modules > Install from storage, and flash the package.
- Reboot your device.
- Verify the executable inside Termux or an ADB shell:
su rsync --version
