Overview

The Android window manager provides an application flag known as FLAG_SECURE (WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_SECURE). When declared by developers, the operating system treats the window’s surface as confidential, blanking out previews in the Recents menu, preventing screen casting, and rejecting screenshot or screen recording requests. Furthermore, starting in Android 14, apps can register detection callbacks to detect whenever a user attempts a hardware screen capture.

Most tools designed to disable FLAG_SECURE rely on heavy runtime hook frameworks like LSPosed or complex Zygisk injectors, which are easily detected by banking applications and anti-tamper suites.

Developed by ShivamXD6 (@BuildBytes), Simple Flag Secure takes an entirely different architectural approach: it performs parallel on-device bytecode patching using dexlib2 during installation. By directly adjusting framework bytecode systemlessly, it unlocks recording and capture capabilities with zero background memory footprint and zero Zygisk exposure.

Architecture & How It Works

1. Standalone Bytecode Modification

Rather than hooking methods inside the running Zygote process, Simple Flag Secure decompiles and patches framework .jar files (services.jar, framework.jar) during flash time. It alters the conditional branches inside WindowState and WindowManagerService that evaluate FLAG_SECURE.

2. Android 14+ Screenshot Detection Evasion

Android 14 introduced native screenshot detection listeners (Activity.ScreenCaptureCallback). Even if screenshots were unlocked, apps could detect the action and flag or ban user accounts. Simple Flag Secure intercepts these observer notifications, preventing target apps from learning that a screenshot was taken.

3. Manager Action Button & Privacy Mode

For users who sometimes need screenshots blocked (e.g., when screen sharing presentations or testing UI flows), Simple Flag Secure includes a Privacy Mode.

  • Supported managers (such as KernelSU, APatch, and MMRL) display an interactive Action button on the module card.
  • Tapping the Action button toggles between unrestricted capture and strict privacy mode instantly, requiring no device reboot.

Installation & Setup

  1. Open Magisk, KernelSU, or APatch.
  2. Select the Simple Flag Secure .zip release and initiate installation.
  3. The installer automatically detects your Android API level, decompresses necessary framework components, executes parallel DEX patching via dexlib2, and writes modified classes to the module’s systemless overlay.
  4. Reboot the smartphone.
  5. Attempt a screenshot inside an app that previously displayed black screens or “Can’t take screenshot due to security policy” warnings (such as Telegram Secret Chats or banking previews).

Diagnostic Logs & Troubleshooting

  • Installation Log: The installer generates a verbose trace saved directly to:
    /sdcard/Download/sfs_install.log
If installation fails due to a heavily obfuscated vendor framework, this log records the exact DEX class and method offset failure.
  • De-odexing or Multi-Dex Issues: If a ROM uses non-standard ART compilation or custom vendor frameworks, ensure sufficient free space on /data for the DEX patching workspace.
