Overview
By default, Android’s system mixer processes audio through a compromise-heavy pipeline designed to minimize battery drain on low-power speaker hardware rather than deliver true fidelity. Even when using audiophile music players, high-resolution streams are subjected to coarse resampling, 5000µs USB buffer periods that introduce jitter, and vendor Dynamic Range Control (DRC) compression filters.
Developed by zyhk, Audio Samplerate Changer transforms Android’s system-wide audio mixer. Automating the author’s renowned “USB SampleRate Changer” root script, the module modifies the active version 7.0 audio policy configuration, overrides the USB Audio Class HAL driver to run at up to 768kHz/32-bit, eliminates redundant Bluetooth resampling stages, and adjusts kernel I/O tunables to suppress jitter.
Architectural Improvements
1. USB HAL & Jitter Reduction
- 768kHz & 32-Bit USB Pipeline: Elevates the hardware communication ceiling of USB Audio Class drivers to 768kHz (capped at 192kHz on Google Tensor SoCs to prevent hardware buffer overruns).
- 2000µs Transfer Period: Drops the standard 5000µs USB data packet interval down to 2000µs. This tighter timing window substantially suppresses timing phase jitter between the phone’s USB controller and asynchronous DAC clocks.
2. Intelligent Bluetooth Codec Synchronization
Standard Android Bluetooth stacks frequently decode high-resolution wireless streams and pass them through an intermediate mixer resampler. Audio Samplerate Changer synchronizes the AOSP Bluetooth audio driver directly to the active codec’s native frequency (e.g., 96kHz for Sony LDAC), eliminating destructive double-resampling artifacts.
3. Integrated DRC Suppression & Internal Speaker Output
- Full DRC Removal: Disables vendor Dynamic Range Control across all endpoints, preserving dynamic peaks and natural acoustic decay.
- Internal Speaker Mixing: Raises Qualcomm internal speaker pipelines to 384kHz & 32-bit, reducing harmonic distortion in the audio DSP.
- Call Screening Deactivation: Disables background call screening hooks under the audio HAL, clearing real-time execution threads.
Compatibility & Conflicts
- Supported Firmware: Designed strictly for Android 14, 15, and 16 systems utilizing the standard 7.0 audio policy configuration XML architecture.
- Unsupported Hardware: Newer AIDL-only audio HAL firmware implementations (such as the Google Pixel 9 series) do not use version 7.0 XML policies and are incompatible.
- Explicit Conflicts:
- Do NOT install alongside
drc-removerorusb-samplerate-unlocker. The functionality of both standalone modules is already compiled directly into this package.
- Do NOT install alongside
Recommended Audiophile Settings
For optimal sound staging and bit transparency:
- Disable Absolute Volume: Open Settings → Developer Options and toggle Disable absolute volume to ON.
- Maximize Hardware Output: Set Bluetooth or DAC volume to maximum on the device, adjusting listening level using your amplifier or headphone hardware dials.
- (Optional) Pair with companion modules such as Audio Misc. Settings or Audio Jitter Silencer.
Verification
To verify that your audio mixer is outputting at high sample rates:
# Check USB DAC active hardware sample rate during playback
su -c cat /proc/asound/card*/pcm*p/sub*/hw_params
# Check active Android audio flinger tracks and sink sample rates
su -c dumpsys media.audio_flinger
Look for the active output thread corresponding to your USB or Bluetooth device; it should reflect unthrottled sample rates and bit depths.
