Overview
Unlike desktop browsers where browser extensions can filter DOM elements, blocking mobile advertisements, analytics trackers, and malicious payloads across thousands of third-party Android applications requires intercepting network domain lookups before sockets connect. While VPN-based adblockers (like Blokada or AdGuard) accomplish this, they run continuous background services that consume RAM, generate heat, and prevent the use of genuine external VPNs.
StevenBlock solves this problem systemlessly. By binding a compiled, deduplicated hosts table based on Steven Blackβs consolidated hosts over /system/etc/hosts, it sinks ad and malware domains straight to 0.0.0.0 with zero CPU overhead, zero battery impact, and no background memory footprint.
Why Hosts-Based Blocking?
- System-Wide Coverage: Blocks ads not only inside Chrome or Firefox, but across games, social apps, news readers, and in-app web views.
- Zero Battery Draw: Operates natively through the Linux kernelβs local DNS resolver cache (
libcgetaddrinfo). No background daemon remains running in memory. - Frees Up Local VPN Slot: Because StevenBlock does not configure an Android
VpnService, you remain free to use WireGuard, OpenVPN, or corporate VPN tunnels simultaneously. - Pure Systemless Mounting: Leverages overlay filesystems to replace the hosts file during boot, preserving dm-verity and SafetyNet/Play Integrity passes.
Installation
- Download the latest
StevenBlock.zippackage from GitHub releases. - Flash the module in Magisk, KernelSU, or APatch.
- Reboot your device to apply the updated hosts table.
- Ads and tracking scripts will now be blocked system-wide.
