Overview
Developed by Numbersf, MakeFontsGreatAgain (MFGA) is a comprehensive typography engine for rooted Android devices.
Standard Android system fonts often suffer from incomplete glyph coverage across international character sets, historic scripts, math symbols, and the latest emoji revisions. MFGA consolidates multiple world-class typefaces into a unified font stack, achieving complete Unicode coverage while providing advanced customization tools.
Technical Architecture & How It Works
Font Fallback Injection & GMS Suppression
MFGA operates at the system font configuration layer:
- Fallback Font Stack Composition: Overlays
/system/etc/fonts.xmland/etc/font_fallback.xmlto inject high-priority font chains covering standard scripts, private-use areas (PUA), and emojis. - GMS Font Provider Block: Intercepts Google’s remote font downloading services in Google Play Services, ensuring that apps like Gmail and Google Chrome use local MFGA glyphs rather than downloading stock Google fonts.
- COLRv0 Glyph Coloring: Modifies color vector layers in OpenType fonts on Android 10+, allowing custom user color palettes for specific emoji categories.
Installation & Setup
- Download the latest
MakeFontsGreatAgain-*.ziprelease. - Flash the module in Magisk, KernelSU, or APatch.
- Reboot your device.
- Launch the WebUI to customize font ranges and GMS suppression settings.
Configuration & Usage
Inside the MFGA WebUI:
- GMS Font Blocking: Toggle suppression of Google’s dynamic fonts across Google apps.
- Font Range Masking: Exclude specific Unicode character ranges from replacement if you prefer your OEM’s regional font for certain scripts.
- Color Customization: Customize accent colors for symbols on Android 10+ devices.
Troubleshooting & Common Issues
- Play Integrity Failures: If Play Integrity verification breaks after enabling GMS font blocking, ensure you have not enabled global unmount in Shamiko or PIF for Google Play Services.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does blocking GMS fonts conflict with Play Integrity Fix (PIF)?
Blocking GMS dynamic font providers requires intercepting Google Play Services and Play Store processes. If your root manager or PIF module unmounts modules from Play Services, the font suppression hook fails. You must configure PIF to keep modules visible to Play Services or disable global unmounting.
How does MFGA handle undefined Unicode symbols?
Undefined or reserved characters are handled by ZUno-Number.ttf, which displays the character's exact hexadecimal Unicode codepoint rather than rendering an uninformative blank square or question mark.
