Overview

Maintained by Keinta15, Magisk-iOS-Emoji is a systemless typography module that brings authentic Apple iOS emojis to rooted Android devices.

While Android devices bundle Google’s Noto Color Emoji font by default, many users prefer the visual fidelity, color palette, and cultural recognizability of Apple’s design language. Magisk-iOS-Emoji systemlessly substitutes the platform emoji font file with Apple’s latest Unicode 17.0 glyph set across all applications.

Technical Architecture & How It Works

Font Subsystem Binding & GMS Provider Workaround

Android’s font rendering architecture has evolved significantly across recent releases:

  1. Systemless Font Replacement: Replaces /system/fonts/NotoColorEmoji.ttf and /product/fonts/ with the compiled iOS font package during early boot.
  2. XML Font Mapping: Patches /system/etc/fonts.xml and /etc/font_fallback.xml to prioritize the Apple glyph table for emoji codepoint queries.
  3. GMS Font Provider Override: Modern Google apps use dynamic font providers to fetch Google emoji updates in user space. Magisk-iOS-Emoji’s service.sh automatically suppresses the GMS downloadable font provider flag, preventing apps from overriding the systemless font.

Installation & Setup

  1. Download the latest Magisk-iOS-Emoji-v*.zip from the official releases repository.
  2. Open your root manager (Magisk, KernelSU, or APatch).
  3. Flash the module zip and reboot your device.
  4. Open any text editor or keyboard (such as Gboard) to verify that iOS emoji glyphs appear.

Configuration & Usage

The module operates automatically once installed with zero configuration needed. To update emoji sets when Apple releases new Unicode revisions, simply flash the newer module version.

Troubleshooting & Common Issues

  • Emojis Revert to Android Default: If certain apps revert to Android emojis, verify in your root manager that service.sh executed cleanly at boot to suppress the Google Play Services downloadable font service.
  • Square Boxes for New Emojis: Ensure your keyboard application supports the latest Unicode specification, and clear keyboard app cache if new emojis appear as blank boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some messaging apps (like Messenger or WhatsApp) still show Android emojis?

Some messaging applications bundle their own proprietary emoji font files directly within the APK or query Google's remote font provider. Magisk-iOS-Emoji includes scripts to disable Google's dynamic font provider, but apps that use hardcoded SVG glyphs will display their internal designs.

Will this module affect my device's primary text font?

No. This module strictly replaces the emoji font (NotoColorEmoji.ttf) and its font configuration mappings. Your system UI font (Roboto, Google Sans, or OEM font) remains completely untouched.
